text “Untangling masses of individuals” by Hiroshi Okura

Untangling masses of individuals

I first encountered the work of Mi-Yeon at her August 2016 solo exhibition at Niigata Eya. On that occasion I also read her texts (essays and novels), and will never forget how she wrote, if I remember rightly, that as a young child she had believed herself to be the only “I,” until one day being genuinely surprised to learn that there were other “I’s” in the world. It strikes me that the unique texture of her photo book Alone Together is born not out of any expansion sensed by the “I” that thought it was all by itself (alone) when it learned of the existence of “I’s” other than itself, the alone (I) then disappearing and becoming together (we), but rather from that of a strong alone, remaining so as it becomes a together, that is, a community composed of unique “I’s.” The photos brought back from India by Mi-Yeon in recent years are seductive in their generous, limitless expansiveness, and thus tempting to describe as a further extension of that original expansion. Light shimmering on the Ganges, people wearing, adorning, rubbing themselves with red, vermillion, crimson. The bright light and vibrant color that suffuse these photos are at once real light and color, and also the light and color found deep within the “alone” of each individual who visits here, prays, bathes, lingers on the riverbank. Light and color take alone and make it together, connecting. The photos of Mi-Yeon, who has apparently started visiting sacred sites in locations including Jeju Island and Okinawa, move like compass needles pointing to places far away yet very close by, untangling masses of divided individuals along the way. (Okura Hiroshi / Sakyukan director, Art critic)

Rainy season had just begun, and the weed was shooting up, taller each time I saw it.
I looked forward to monitoring the progress of that weed day-in,day-out as I passed by each morning and evening.

I wondered what landscape the weed saw – roots burrowed in the ground,
spending its entire existence in the same place, unable to take a single independent
step – and what it looked at. Lowering my camera to its level, lying flat on the ground,
I peered through the viewfinder. Captured in the square frame, looked at,
the weed was in turn looking.

The weed’s name was himemukashi yomogi – Canadian fleabane.
Having encountered this specimen of yomogi I started noticing other weeds
unobtrusively growing wild about the place. From the rainy season into summer,
I set out to check out different paths, eager to encounter their tiny presences.

After a while, I noticed that the yomogi had fallen over. I continued to photograph it,
whatever state it was in. Then one morning, it had disappeared without trace.

That weed fulfilled its life, albeit short, and even now, as if searching for its reincarnated form,
I find my eyes drawn to other yomogi, on other, different paths.

Memories all mine, of which no one else knows: sometimes they threaten to melt, mirage-like,
in the heat of that hot summer, yet our conversation, like a series of trysts, is captured on film,
crystal-clear and evidence-like.

“KUU”, translated into English as “Emptiness”, is a central teaching of Buddhism.
Nothing has a separate self, and nothing exists by itself.
All things depend on causes and conditions.
When conditions are sufficient, things(we) manifest and when conditions are no longer sufficient, things(we) go into hiding.
It is not a birth of something out of nothing. There has been only a change in form.
All phenomena are in a constant process of manifesting.

This series is an attempt to express “Emptiness” through photography.
The landscapes in various places sometimes tell me a story of impermanence;
yesterday, today, or tomorrow are not the same, and also not different.

Alone Together

I may have been your great-grandmother. Your face, passing by me, I know it.

At a certain point in time, I began to think there are no unrelated people in this world.
As we engage in our lives, each of us who live as individual existences will, at a certain moment, come across each other suddenly.
When we do, all proper names will be stripped away and we all become “I,” just one of the number of people in the world.
At the root of life that breathes in the depths of each of us, we will feel that we are all directly connected.

When in a large crowd of people, “I” vanishes. Within the “countless I’s,” the “big I.”
